Biography:

Madhupal Kannambathu, a prominent figure in Malayalam cinema, is an accomplished Indian actor, director, and screenwriter. His cinematic journey began with his acting debut in “Kashmeeram” in 1994, marking the inception of a versatile career. Later, he ventured into direction with his directorial debut, “Thalappavu” (2008), a film portraying the story of Naxal Varghese, which garnered numerous awards in 2008.

Hailing from Kozhikode, Madhupal’s association with cinema traces back to his childhood in Palakkad, where his father, Chengalath Madhava Menon, operated a movie theatre. Madhupal holds a postgraduate degree in commerce and has authored several short stories in Malayalam, translated into English, Hindi, and Tamil, featured in publications such as Mathrubhumi, Madhyamam, and Bhashaposhini magazines.

Having worked as an assistant director to notable filmmakers like Bharath Gopi and Rajiv Anchal, Madhupal has contributed to acclaimed projects like “Butterflies,” “Kashmeeram,” and “Guru.” His acting career encompasses over 90 films in Malayalam, Tamil, English, and Hindi, earning him recognition for both lead and negative roles.

Madhupal’s directorial achievements include “Thalappavu,” which received the Kerala State Best Debutante Director Award and other accolades. His literary pursuits extend to seven collections of short stories, showcasing his prowess in the world of letters.

Actively involved in charitable projects, Madhupal played a role in assisting those affected by the 2004 Indian Ocean earthquake and holds positions in various cultural and film organizations.

Currently, he serves as the Chairman of The Kerala State Cultural Activists Welfare Fund Board. Residing in Thiruvananthapuram with his wife Rekha and their daughters Madhavi and Meenakshi, Madhupal continues to leave an enduring impact on the realms of cinema and literature.
