Lula Carvalho

Biography:

Cinematographer Lula Carvalho, ASC, is from Brazil. His body of work includes American films such as RoboCop (2014) and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (2014), as well as international productions such as Elite Squad (2007) and its sequel (2010). Carvalho joined the American Society of Cinematographers in 2022.

Carvalho spent his childhood working on movie sets alongside his father, the well-known cinematographer Walter Carvalho. When he was ten years old, he learned how to load film magazines for the camera department. After graduating from high school, he began working as a second camera assistant, and at twenty, he was a professional first photographer assistant.

Carvalho focused on more than 19 highly regarded Brazilian films, such as Héctor Babenco’s Carandiru, Walter Salles’ Behind the Sun, and Fernando Meirelles’ City of God.
