In Santiago de Compostela, José Luis Castro Zahera was born on May 23, 1966. Zahera’s role as Petréleo in the television series Mareas vivas brought him early popular exposure in his home region of Galicia. In José Luis García Sánchez’s Divine Words (1987), he made his feature film debut.
His role as Cabrera in The Realm earned him the 2019 Goya Award for Best Supporting Actor. For his supporting role as the resentful peasant Xan in The Beasts (2022), he was awarded another Goya. He was awarded the Gold Medal of Merit in the Fine Arts in January of 2024.
