Lakshminarayana Vaidyanathan, born on April 9, 1942, and passing away on May 19, 2007, was a highly regarded musicologist, music director, and composer deeply rooted in the classical Carnatic music tradition. He hailed from Chennai and was born to V. Lakshminarayana and Seethalakshmi, both accomplished musicians. Notably, he was the elder brother of the renowned violinist duo L. Shankar and L. Subramaniam. The three siblings received their musical education from their father.
Vaidyanathan’s career commenced as an Assistant music director under G. K. Venkatesh, and he went on to compose music for more than 170 films in languages including Tamil and Kannada. His remarkable contributions included scoring for films like “Pesum Padam,” “Ezhavathu Manithan,” “Dasaratham,” and “Marupakkam” in Tamil, and “Aparichita,” “Kubi Matthu Iyala,” and “Ondu Mutthina Kathe” in Kannada. He earned a reputation as one of the country’s finest music arrangers, known for his innovative use of rare and lesser-known instruments. He skillfully blended the sounds of the mandolin, flute, and violin with various folk percussion instruments, all before the advent of modern technological advancements in sound mixing.
Vaidyanathan also collaborated with C. Ashwath and jointly composed music for numerous Kannada films under the name Ashwath-Vaidi. One of his most memorable compositions was the opening and closing score, “Thaana na nana,” for the TV series “Malgudi Days,” directed by Shankar Nag.
In recognition of his outstanding contributions to cinema, the government of Tamil Nadu honored Vaidyanathan with the prestigious Kalaimamani award in 2003.
