Kirk Douglas

Biography:

Kirk Douglas was an outstanding American actor, producer, and philanthropist who turned out to be one of the greatest Hollywood stars of the Golden Era. Issur Danielovitch, born on December 9, 1916, in Amsterdam, New York, came from a poor Jewish family of immigrants. After fighting in World War II in the U.S. Navy, he began his career as an actor and made his first film appearance in The Strange Love of Martha Ivers (1946). Soon Douglas gained recognition due to his passionate acting in such films as Out of the Past (1947), Champion (1949), The Bad and the Beautiful (1952), and Lust for Life (1956), where he was the painter Vincent van Gogh.

For his acting in Champion, The Bad and the Beautiful, and Lust for Life Douglas was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Actor, but he did not manage to win it. However, Douglas became famous for such films as Paths of Glory (1957), Spartacus (1960), The Vikings (1958), and Lonely Are the Brave (1962). As a producer, he was instrumental in the creation of the film Spartacus and fought against Hollywood blacklists by demanding official recognition of screenwriter Dalton Trumbo. In 1996 he was honored with an Honorary Academy Award for his contribution to cinema for 50 years. Kirk Douglas died on February 5, 2020, at the age of 103.
