Kader Khan was an illustrious Indian actor, screenwriter, and film producer, known for his significant contributions to the Hindi cinema. Born in Kabul, Afghanistan, on 22 October 1937, into a Sunni Muslim family, Khan had a prolific career spanning over three decades.
Kader Khan’s early life took shape in Kabul, where his father, Abdul Rahman Khan, hailed from Kandahar, Afghanistan, and his mother, Iqbal Begum, was from Pishin in the Baluchistan Province of British India. Raised in the Kamathipura neighborhood of Mumbai after his family relocated from Kabul, Khan began his education in a local municipal school and later attended Ismail Yusuf College, affiliated with Bombay University. He pursued a degree in Civil Engineering, graduating from the college. Between 1970 and 1975, Khan served as a professor of civil engineering at M. H. Saboo Siddik College of Engineering in Byculla.
While actively involved in theatre, Khan’s breakthrough into the film industry came when comedian Agha noticed him during a play named “Taash Ke Patey.” Agha recommended him to the legendary actor Dilip Kumar, who was impressed and subsequently signed Khan for his films “Sagina” and “Bairaag.” This marked the beginning of Khan’s prolific film career.
Kader Khan’s impact on Hindi cinema was profound. He appeared in over 300 Bollywood films, making his debut in the 1973 film “Daag.” Beyond acting, he established himself as a prolific screenwriter, contributing dialogues to around 200 films. His collaboration with Dilip Kumar and his entry into scriptwriting with “Jawani Diwani” paved the way for his illustrious career.
