Joseph Hill “Joss” Whedon (born June 23, 1964) is an American screenwriter, director, producer, comic book writer, and composer. He is widely known for creating several notable television series, including Buffy the Vampire Slayer (1997–2003) and its spin-off Angel (1999–2004), the space Western Firefly (2002), the web musical Dr. Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog (2008), the sci-fi drama Dollhouse (2009–2010), as well as for his work on Marvel’s The Avengers (2012), its series Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. (2013–2020), and The Nevers (2021).
Whedon began his career writing for sitcoms before scripting the 1992 film Buffy the Vampire Slayer, which was poorly received but later adapted into a highly acclaimed TV series. He co-wrote Toy Story (1995), and wrote Alien Resurrection (1997). After success in television, he returned to film, directing Serenity (2005), co-writing and producing The Cabin in the Woods (2012), and directing Much Ado About Nothing (2012). For the Marvel Cinematic Universe, he wrote and directed The Avengers (2012) and Avengers: Age of Ultron (2015), and contributed to Justice League (2017), overseeing reshoots and co-writing parts of the script.
In addition to his film and TV work, Whedon is a composer—most notably for the Buffy the Vampire Slayer musical episode “Once More, with Feeling” and Dr. Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog—and a comic book writer, creating continuations for his shows and writing for established franchises like Astonishing X-Men.
Born in New York City, Whedon comes from a family of television writers, including his father Tom Whedon and grandfather John Whedon. His mother, Ann Lee Stearns, was a teacher, activist, and aspiring novelist. Whedon has three siblings, including writers Jed and Zack Whedon. He described a challenging childhood, marked by high parental expectations, bullying from his older brothers, and early trauma, which he later said contributed to his adult struggles and complex post-traumatic stress disorder.
Whedon developed a love for British TV and comedy at a young age and attended Riverdale Country School, Winchester College in England, and later graduated from Wesleyan University in 1987. At Wesleyan, he met film scholar Jeanine Basinger, who became his mentor, and began conceptualizing Buffy Summers.
He worked as a staff writer on sitcoms like Roseanne and Parenthood (1989–1990) and contributed uncredited script work to several films, including The Getaway, Speed, Waterworld, Twister, and early drafts of X-Men. He co-wrote Toy Story, earning an Academy Award nomination for Best Original Screenplay.
In 1997, Whedon created Buffy the Vampire Slayer, depicting a young woman battling supernatural forces while exploring themes of female empowerment. The series received multiple awards and nominations, including Emmy and Nebula nods, and has been cited as highly influential in popular culture. Whedon extended the Buffy universe into comics, including Fray, Tales of the Slayers, and canonical eighth and ninth seasons of Buffy, while also creating the spin-off series Angel (1999–2004).
He followed this with Firefly, a space Western exploring anti-authoritarian themes and frontier life through the crew of the spaceship Serenity. Despite critical praise, the series suffered from network mismanagement, was aired out of order, and was canceled prematurely. Whedon adapted it into the feature film Serenity (2005), which received critical acclaim and won several awards.
Whedon also made significant contributions to the comic book world, including creating Astonishing X-Men and writing for Runaways, as well as introducing new characters to the Marvel Universe, such as Abigail Brand and S.W.O.R.D. He also wrote tie-in comics for Serenity, including Those Left Behind, Better Days, and The Shepherd’s Tale.
Beginning in July 2020, multiple allegations emerged regarding Whedon’s workplace behavior, including claims of abusive and toxic conduct during the production of Justice League and other projects. Notable figures such as Ray Fisher, Gal Gadot, Charisma Carpenter, Amber Benson, and Michelle Trachtenberg publicly described unprofessional or harmful behavior. HBO parted ways with Whedon on The Nevers, and subsequent investigations and public statements revealed widespread concerns about his conduct, with Whedon denying wrongdoing but acknowledging a confrontational nature.
In 2023, screenwriter Zak Penn described Whedon as difficult and uncooperative while taking over The Avengers script, portraying him as dismissive of collaborators.
