John Huston
Biography:
John Huston was an American film maker, writer, actor and visual artist famous for his unique style in crime, adventure, and literary films. He was born on August 5, 1906, in Nevada, Missouri, to parents who had been in show business all their lives. He started his career as a screen writer and then went on to become a film maker. His first successful film making venture was The Maltese Falcon (1941). It was a milestone in the history of film noir genre and launched him into fame as a filmmaker in Hollywood. Some other successful films he made included: In This Our Life (1942), The Treasure of the Sierra Madre (1948), Key Largo (1948), The Asphalt Jungle (1950) and The African Queen (1951).
During his long life time John Huston managed to receive 15 Oscar nominations and won two Oscars for The Treasure of the Sierra Madre: Best Director and Best Adapted Screenplay which made him one of the few film makers to receive both of these awards for the same film. He also made such famous films as Moulin Rouge (1952), The Misfits (1961), The Man Who Would Be King (1975), Prizzi’s Honor (1985) and The Dead (1987). He was also a successful actor appearing in such films as The Cardinal (1963), Chinatown (1974), The Wind and the Lion (1975). Huston lived and worked in Hollywood for over five decades receiving many accolades for his contribution to the cinema. He died on August 28, 1987, in Middletown, Rhode Island.
