Biography:

Jayanthi, born Kamala Kumari on January 6, 1945, in Bellary, a part of the erstwhile Madras Presidency in British India, was a legendary Indian actress celebrated for her significant contributions to Kannada cinema and Tamil cinema. Her stage name, Jayanthi, became synonymous with versatility and excellence in acting. Notably active in the 1960s, 1970s, and early 1980s, Jayanthi’s illustrious career spanned over 500 films in multiple languages, including Kannada, Telugu, Tamil, Malayalam, Hindi, and Marathi.

Raised in a family with academic roots, Jayanthi’s father, Balasubramanyam, served as an English professor at St Joseph’s College in Bangalore. Unfortunately, her parents separated during her youth, prompting her mother, Santhanalakshmi, to relocate with Jayanthi and her two younger brothers to Madras (now Chennai). Despite the family’s challenges, Jayanthi’s mother nurtured aspirations of making her daughter a classical dancer, leading Jayanthi to enroll in a dance school. Notably, during her time at the dance school, she developed a lasting friendship with the popular Tamil actress Manorama.

However, destiny had different plans for Jayanthi, and her journey took a cinematic turn. Stepping into the world of acting, she became a trailblazer in the Indian film industry. Her cinematic oeuvre spanned various genres, showcasing her remarkable range and talent. Her ability to effortlessly transition between diverse roles earned her acclaim and recognition.

Jayanthi’s excellence in acting did not go unnoticed, garnering her seven Karnataka State Film Awards. Among these accolades were four awards for Best Actress and two for Best Supporting Actress. In addition to state honors, she received the prestigious President’s Medal for Best Actress and two Filmfare Awards for Best Actress. These accolades not only acknowledged her outstanding performances but also solidified her status as one of the most revered actresses in Kannada cinema.

Media outlets hailed Jayanthi as Kannada cinema’s “most bold and beautiful” actress, a title that became synonymous with her name. The industry further honored her with the title “Abhinaya Sharadhe,” signifying her prowess as the Goddess Sharada in acting.

Jayanthi’s legacy extends beyond her on-screen accomplishments; she remains an influential figure in the annals of Indian cinema. Her passing on July 26, 2021, marked the end of an era, leaving behind a body of work that continues to be celebrated and cherished by audiences and filmmakers alike. Jayanthi’s life and career exemplify the transformative power of cinema and the enduring impact of a truly remarkable artist.
