Actress Janet McTeer OBE was born in England on August 5, 1961. She received training at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art before becoming well-known for her many on-screen and stage appearances in both contemporary dramas and historical plays. Among her many honors are nominations for two Academy Awards, a Primetime Emmy Award, an Olivier Award, a Golden Globe Award, and a Tony Award. Because of her contributions to theater, she was named an Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) in 2008.
The Grace of Mary Traverse, for which McTeer received a nomination for the 1986 Olivier Award for Best Newcomer, marked her professional theatrical debut in 1984. For her role in A Doll’s House in 1997, she won the Tony Award for Best Actress in a Play and the Laurence Olivier Award for Best Actress. She was also nominated for two more Broadway roles: Bernhardt/Hamlet in 2019 and Mary Stuart in 2009.
With two Academy Award nominations—one for Best Supporting Actress for Albert Nobbs in 2011 and one for Best Actress for Tumbleweeds in 1999—McTeer has also garnered praise for her cinematic appearances. Other roles include The Divergent Series (2015–2016), Songcatcher (2000), As You Like It (2006), Wuthering Heights (1992), Carrington (1995), Velvet Goldmine (1998), and The Menu (2022).
