Hayley Elizabeth Atwell, born on 5 April 1982 in London, is the only child of Allison Cain, who is English, and Grant Atwell, an American photographer from Kansas City, Missouri. She holds dual British and American citizenship.
She was educated at Sion-Manning Roman Catholic Girls’ School before taking her A-Levels at the London Oratory School. After spending two years traveling with her father and working for a casting director, Atwell trained at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama, graduating in 2005 with a degree in acting.
Her professional stage debut came in Prometheus Bound (2005), where she portrayed Io to strong reviews. She went on to perform with the Royal Shakespeare Company in Women Beware Women (2006) and appeared at the National Theatre in Man of Mode and Major Barbara (2007–2008), earning an Ian Charleson Commendation.
Atwell’s first major film role was in Woody Allen’s Cassandra’s Dream (2007). She later appeared in The Duchess (2008), which earned her a British Independent Film Award nomination, and Brideshead Revisited (2008). She made her West End debut in A View From the Bridge (2009), receiving an Olivier Award nomination.
On television, she starred in the miniseries The Prisoner (2009), Any Human Heart (2010), and Pillars of the Earth (2010), the latter earning her a Golden Globe nomination.
In 2011, Atwell rose to international fame playing Peggy Carter in Captain America: The First Avenger, a role she reprised across multiple Marvel films and series including Agent Carter (2015–2016), Avengers: Age of Ultron (2015), Ant-Man (2015), Avengers: Endgame (2019), and Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness (2022). She also voiced the character in video games and animated adaptations.
Outside Marvel, she appeared in Disney’s Cinderella (2015), Christopher Robin (2018), and lent her voice to Peter Rabbit 2: The Runaway (2021). On stage, she performed in The Faith Machine (2011), The Pride (2013, earning another Olivier nomination), Dry Powder (2018), and Measure for Measure (2018).
She earned acclaim for roles in BBC’s Restless (2013), the Black Mirror episode “Be Right Back” (2013), Howards End (2017–2018), and The Long Song (2019). In 2016–2017, she starred in the ABC series Conviction.
More recently, Atwell was cast in Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One (2023) and its sequel Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning (2025). In 2020, she began hosting the True Spies podcast and in 2022 launched Hayley Selects in partnership with Picturehouse.
In December 2024, it was announced that she would return as Peggy Carter in Avengers: Doomsday, set for release in December 2026.
