Hamsalekha, an accomplished Indian film composer and songwriter, has been an influential figure in the South Indian cinema, primarily the Kannada film industry, since the late 1980s. Besides composing music and writing songs, he is also known for his roles as a screenplay writer, dialogue writer, instrumentalist, and conductor, boasting a portfolio of over 500 albums.
Hamsalekha’s impressive career has earned him several accolades, including a National Film Award, six Filmfare Awards in the Best Music Director category, and seven Karnataka State Film Awards—four for his music direction and three for his lyrical contributions. Furthermore, he has been granted an honorary doctorate by Bangalore University.
Born as Gangaraju in 1951 to K. H. Govindaraju and Rajamma in Tulasikatte, near Akkipete in Bangalore, Hamsalekha initially worked in his father’s printing press after completing his studies. Later, he joined his brother Balakrishna’s orchestra group. It was his teacher, Lavani Neelakantappa, who modified his name to “Hamsalekha.”
His journey into the world of feature films began when director M. N. Prasad offered him an opportunity to write a song for the film “Triveni” in 1973. This marked his debut in the film industry, with the song “Neena Bhagavantha” featuring actor Udaykumar.
His official cinema career commenced as a dialogue and lyric writer for the movie “Naanu Nanna Hendthi” in 1985. However, he achieved widespread recognition and popularity through his collaboration with actor-director Ravichandran, most notably in the 1987 film “Premaloka.”
