Georges St-Pierre
Biography:
Georges St-Pierre was born on May 19, 1981, in Saint-Isidore, Montérégie, Quebec, to Roland and Pauline St-Pierre. He has two younger sisters. His childhood was difficult, as he often faced bullying in school, where classmates would steal his clothes and money. To defend himself, he began learning Kyokushin Karate at age seven. As a child, he also played hockey, skated, and participated in other sports. St-Pierre attended École Pierre-Bédard High School, where he set a school record for the most chin-ups. After graduating, he studied kinesiology at Cégep Édouard-Montpetit. Before beginning his professional fighting career, he worked as a bouncer at a nightclub in Montreal’s South Shore and as a garbage collector for six months to pay his tuition. By age 12, he was already a 2nd-dan black belt in Kyokushin Karate, and he had his first professional fight at 20. Inspired by Jean-Claude Van Damme in his youth, St-Pierre described acting alongside him in Kickboxer: Vengeance as “a dream come true.”
Throughout his career, St-Pierre trained with numerous gyms and coaches. He began wrestling between ages 19 and 20 at the Reinitz Wrestling Center in Montreal under Victor Zilberman and world champion Guivi Sissaouri. Known for his exceptional wrestling ability, St-Pierre often outperformed fighters with collegiate wrestling backgrounds. He even trained with Canada’s national wrestling team and considered competing in the 2008 and 2012 Olympics but couldn’t because of his UFC commitments.
Before fighting B.J. Penn at UFC 58, he trained at Renzo Gracie’s Jiu-Jitsu Academy in New York City and earned his brown belt in 2006. In 2008, he received his black belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu under Bruno Fernandes. St-Pierre also trained in New Mexico at Greg Jackson’s gym with Rashad Evans, Nathan Marquardt, Keith Jardine, and Donald Cerrone. His main coaches were Firas Zahabi (head trainer) and Jonathan Chaimberg (strength and conditioning), who remained with him throughout his career. Between 2006 and 2009, he also trained in Muay Thai under Phil Nurse in New York.
St-Pierre made his UFC debut at UFC 46, defeating Karo Parisyan by unanimous decision, then won against Jay Hieron by first-round TKO at UFC 48. His first title shot came against Matt Hughes at UFC 50 for the vacant Welterweight Championship, but he lost by armbar with 10 seconds left in the first round—his first professional loss. He later rebounded with a win over Dave Strasser via kimura submission and defeated Jason Miller by unanimous decision at UFC 52.
Continuing his rise, St-Pierre submitted Frank Trigg at UFC 54 and became the first fighter to finish Sean Sherk at UFC 56. After defeating B.J. Penn by split decision at UFC 58, he earned another title shot but had to withdraw from UFC 63 due to a groin injury. During The Ultimate Fighter 4: The Comeback, he appeared as a trainer and mentor to fellow Canadian Patrick Côté.
At UFC 63, after Matt Hughes defeated B.J. Penn, St-Pierre entered the cage and told Hughes he was “not impressed” with his performance, a comment that caused tension between them. The two met again at UFC 65, where St-Pierre won by TKO in the second round, earning the Knockout of the Night and the UFC Welterweight Championship.
However, at UFC 69 in 2007, St-Pierre lost his title in a major upset to Matt Serra, who was a heavy underdog. St-Pierre later admitted he was distracted by personal struggles, including his father’s illness and the death of a cousin, though he took full responsibility, saying Serra was the better fighter that night.
Beyond fighting, St-Pierre established the GSP Foundation, which promotes youth sports participation and combats bullying. He has also spoken openly about mental health, revealing that during his first retirement, he experienced depression and obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). St-Pierre credited his OCD as both a challenge and a driving force behind his discipline and success.
