George Kotsiopoulos
Biography:
George Kotsiopoulos was born on November 18, 1968, in Skokie, Illinois, where he grew up and attended Niles West High School. He earned a Bachelor’s degree in Accountancy from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Reflecting on his early years, Kotsiopoulos recalled, “I was always drawn to the arts, but my Greek immigrant parents valued careers as doctors, lawyers, or businessmen. I got my fashion inspiration from old films and browsing archival Vogue issues at the library. I also secretly went shopping with my older sister, who valued my opinion. Still, I initially put aside fashion and pursued accountancy. I graduated but never took the CPA exam because it bored me. Right after college, I moved to Los Angeles.”
Kotsiopoulos is an American magazine editor, fashion consultant, stylist, and television personality. He serves as style editor at large for C magazine and was formerly a fashion associate at The New York Times Magazine. He also co-hosted Fashion Police on E! Entertainment Television.
He started his career in Hollywood as a publicist in Bragman Nyman Cafarelli’s entertainment division. He then spent eight years in the style department at T: The New York Times Magazine, based on the West Coast, eventually becoming Fashion Associate and Market Editor while producing shoots in Los Angeles, New York, and other locations. Kotsiopoulos has said, “I learned everything about fashion during my time at the New York Times.”
In 2005, he co-hosted the Sephora pilot for E!/Style Networks and worked as a fashion and style correspondent for MSNBC’s Entertainment Hot List. He also appeared as a fashion expert on shows including Good Morning America, E! News Daily, KTLA News, Access Hollywood, YourLA, Good Day LA, American Inventor, House of Boateng, Style Star, How Do I Look, CW Now, and Style Her Famous.
In 2008, Kotsiopoulos contributed to the now-defunct RestlessStyle.com, an online fashion and lifestyle magazine linked to The Young and the Restless, where he appeared as himself on several occasions, most recently in August 2012.
In September 2010, he joined Joan Rivers, Giuliana Rancic, and Kelly Osbourne as co-host of Fashion Police. On taking the role, Kotsiopoulos noted, “It was my first regular television series. I was hesitant at first because I worried about critiquing people I knew and respected as stylists. But I realized this was an opportunity I couldn’t pass up.”
In March 2011, The Hollywood Reporter ranked him 19th among The 25 Most Powerful Stylists in Hollywood. In June 2012, he revealed he was developing an untitled clothing line. In May 2013, he made a cameo with Joan Rivers in Iron Man 3.
In January 2014, Kotsiopoulos published his first book, Glamorous by George, which provides illustrated style advice and tips for achieving a movie-star look on a practical budget.
He was named to OUT’s 2011 OUT100 list of the 100 most influential LGBTQ+ individuals.
Kotsiopoulos is also active in philanthropy. In 2003, he co-founded the annual “Bag Lunch” charity event for P.S. ARTS, a non-profit supporting arts education in public schools. The event, which he co-hosts, auctions over 200 designer handbags with all proceeds going to P.S. ARTS, where he serves on the Board of Directors.
