British television producer and executive Gareth Elwin Neame OBE DL was born on March 8, 1967. Neame oversaw the creation of the dramas Spooks, State of Play, Bodies, Hustle, New Tricks, and Tipping the Velvet while he was an executive at the BBC. He first suggested the idea to Julian Fellowes, the writer and creator of the historical drama series Downton Abbey, where he served as executive producer. He has won the Golden Globe, BAFTA, and Emmy honours.
Neame comes from a family that has been involved in film and television for the past 100 years. Elwin Neame (1885–1923), a photographer and pioneering filmmaker, and Ivy Close, an actress, were his great-grandparents. Neame’s father was writer and producer Christopher Elwin Neame (1942–2011), his great uncle was author and screenwriter Derek Neame (1915–1979), and his grandfather was director, producer, cinematographer, and writer Ronald Neame CBE. He went to West Sussex’s independent Seaford College. At the University of Birmingham, he studied drama and English.
