Indian filmmaker Gandhi Krishna has directed Tamil movies. He started his career working as Shankar’s assistant and has since gone on to make critically and commercially successful movies.
Following his 1996 Indian apprenticeship under Shankar, Gandhi Krishna sought author Sujatha to request permission to turn his book Pirivom Sandhipom into a screenplay. The concept was abandoned when Sujatha turned down the offer, claiming that movie makers had misread the characters in his works.
In late 1997, Gandhi Krishna started working on his debut project, a social drama movie called Engineer. The movie, which was touted as a big-budget endeavor and featured Arvind Swamy and Madhuri Dixit, was based on a true event about a dam project in South India.
Eighty percent of the picture was completed when financial difficulties arose, and the film has not been released since. Gandhi Krishna’s mentor, filmmaker Shankar, made an abortive attempt to bring the project back in 1999 through his production company. In2004, an additional attempt was made to resume the project with Suriya in the starring role, but it was as unsuccessful.
Gandhi Krishna then made his feature film debut as director with the art film Nila Kaalam (2001), a television movie about a coming-of-age that starred kids. The film, which is based on Sujatha’s novel Andru Un Arugil, was praised by critics and won a National Film Award. Gandhi Krishna tackles the “theme confidently,” and a reviewer from The Hindu declared that the movie “is a must for one and all.”
He then directed the 2004 romantic thriller Chellamae, which starred Bharath, Reemma Sen, and newcomer Vishal in the key roles. The story’s central idea was borrowed from a passage in the Ramayana, with Bharath playing the adversary. In contrast to his earlier endeavor, Chellamae was intended to amuse viewers and received favorable reviews from critics in addition to doing well at the box office.
In the end, Gandhi Krishna produced Pirivom Sandhipom in the middle of 2007 as Ananda Thandavam (2009), starring Siddharth Venugopal, Tamannaah Bhatia, and Rukmini Vijayakumar, three rookie actors. Even with extensive pre-release promotion, the movie received bad reviews and did poorly at the box office. “Although it scores in parts for sensitivity, the overall effect is rather lacking in enthusiasm,” observed a Rediff.com critic.
It was claimed in 2012 that L. I. Kannan had been replaced as director of the fantasy film Karikalan by Gandhi Krishna. Despite Gandhi Krishna’s appointment, the film, which starred Vikram, Zarine Khan, and Radhika Apte, has not been able to resume production since it began in 2010.
