Actor Gabriel James Byrne was born in Ireland on May 12, 1950. In addition to being nominated for two Tony Awards, two Primetime Emmy Awards, and a Grammy Award, he has also won a Golden Globe. In addition to being named number 17 on The Irish Times list of Ireland’s finest cinema performers in 2020, Byrne received the Irish cinema and Television Academy’s Lifetime Achievement Award in 2018. He was listed by The Guardian in 2009 as one of the greatest performers who had never been nominated for an Academy Award.
Byrne began acting at Dublin’s Focus Theatre before moving to London’s Royal Court Theatre in 1974. He first appeared on film in the Irish drama serial The Riordans and the spin-off series Bracken. Miller’s Crossing (1990), Miller’s Realm (1986), Lionheart (1987), Miller’s Crossing (1990), Little Women (1994), Dead Man (1995), The Usual Suspects (1995), The Man in the Iron Mask (1998), and Enemy of the State (1998) are some of the films he starred in later. He co-wrote The Last of the High Kings (1996) and produced In the Name of the Father (1993).
