Biography:
Edward G. Robinson was a Romanian-American actor who was a major star during the Golden Age of Hollywood in movies featuring gangs and crimes. He was born on December 12, 1893, as Emanuel Goldenberg in Bucharest, Romania. As a young boy, he immigrated to the United States and after pursuing an acting career on stage, he ventured into cinema. He shot to fame in Little Caesar (1931) where he portrayed the character of the dangerous gangster Cesare Enrico “Rico” Bandello, thus becoming one of the greatest crime film actors of Hollywood at the time. Later on, he appeared in films such as Five Star Final (1931), Smart Money (1931), Double Indemnity (1944), Scarlet Street (1945), and The Woman in the Window (1944).
Besides playing the role of gangsters in many films, Edward G. Robinson displayed much versatility by performing in various types of genres including drama, thriller, comedy, and historical movies. His role as Barton Keyes in the movie directed by Billy Wilder called Double Indemnity is considered one of the best performances by him and he later performed in such films as The Ten Commandments (1956), The Cincinnati Kid (1965), and Soylent Green (1973). Robinson was awarded an Honorary Oscar for his significant contribution to the film industry in 1973 and died in Los Angeles on January 26, 1973.
