Born Deedar Singh Randhawa, Dara Singh Randhawa was an Indian professional wrestler, actor, director, and politician who lived from November 19, 1928, to July 12, 2012. He became the first athlete to be nominated to India’s Rajya Sabha (upper house) and began acting in 1952. In addition to acting in movies and television shows, he was a producer, director, and writer of Hindi and Punjabi films. He became well-known for playing Hanuman in Ramanand Sagar’s Ramayan and the 1976 movie Bajrangbali. Singh was admitted into the WWE Hall of Fame Class of 2018’s Legacy wing.
Singh was born on November 19, 1928, in the village of Dharmuchak in the Majha area of the Punjab region of India, as Deedar Singh Randhawa to Surat Singh Randawa and Balwant Kaur. It was still a colony of the British Raj at the time.
