English director and producer Daniel Francis Boyle was born on October 20, 1956, and works in theatre, television, and film. He has been hailed by the British Film Institute as “one of the liveliest and most unpredictable of British directors, adept at shifting genres and bringing a personal quality to whatever he tackles.”
Shallow Grave (1994), his debut feature, took home the BAFTA Award for Best British Film. Trainspotting (1996) was named the tenth best British film of the 20th century by the British Film Institute. The most popular British film of the decade, Boyle’s 2008 criminal drama Slumdog Millionaire, received eight Academy Awards, including Best Director, out of 10 nominations. He was the recipient of the BAFTA Award for Best Director and the Golden Globe. Boyle’s writing and production of the survival film 127 Hours (2010) earned him two additional Academy Award nominations.
The Beach (2000), T2 Trainspotting (2017), Sunshine (2007), Steve Jobs (2015), 28 Days Later (2002), its sequel 28 Years Later (2025), and Yesterday (2019) are some of his other noteworthy works. Boyle also served as the opening ceremony’s artistic director for the 2012 Summer Olympics.
