Biography:

Christina Ricci was born on February 12, 1980, in Santa Monica, California, as the youngest of four children to Sarah Murdoch and Ralph Ricci. Her father held a variety of jobs—from gym teacher to lawyer, drug counselor, and primal scream therapist—and Ricci wryly referred to him as a “failed cult leader.” Her mother modeled for the Ford Agency in the 1960s and later worked in real estate. Ricci’s heritage includes Italian, Irish, and Scottish roots.

Her family relocated to Montclair, New Jersey, where she attended several schools, including Montclair High and Morristown–Beard, later transferring to Professional Children’s School in New York City. Ricci’s parents divorced when she was a preteen, and she has frequently discussed the emotional impact of her tumultuous relationship with her father.

At age eight, Ricci auditioned for a school production of The Twelve Days of Christmas, ultimately landing the lead after convincing a peer to get himself disqualified. Soon after, she appeared in parody commercials on Saturday Night Live, one of which earned her entry into SAG‑AFTRA.

She made her film debut in Mermaids (1990) as Kate Flax before gaining fame as Wednesday Addams in The Addams Family (1991) and its sequel Addams Family Values (1993). Critics particularly praised her performance in the second film for its maturity and depth.

Ricci’s first leading role came in Casper (1995), one of that year’s top-grossing films. She starred in Gold Diggers: The Secret of Bear Mountain and Now and Then that same year, both of which developed cult followings. Her role in Bastard Out of Carolina (1996) was acclaimed for handling difficult themes with sensitivity.

In 1997, Ricci appeared in Disney’s That Darn Cat, then took on her first mature role as Wendy Hood in Ang Lee’s The Ice Storm. The performance earned her widespread praise for capturing the turmoil of adolescence.

Ricci continued to earn acclaim in Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas (1998) and in three standout films in 1998: Buffalo ’66, Pecker, and The Opposite of Sex—the latter earning her a Golden Globe nomination. Roger Ebert called her performance in Buffalo ’66 “astonishing,” while critics described her in The Opposite of Sex as “deadly funny” and reminiscent of Bette Davis.

In 1999, she starred in Sleepy Hollow, which earned her a Saturn Award for Best Actress. She hosted Saturday Night Live that December, inadvertently punching a fellow actor during a sketch. Other 2000-2001 roles included 200 Cigarettes, Bless the Child, The Man Who Cried, and Prozac Nation—her first producing credit.

Ricci portrayed an ensemble character in HBO’s The Laramie Project (2002), acted in Miranda, and appeared in Ally McBeal for seven episodes. She also produced and starred in the satirical Pumpkin, which Roger Ebert praised for its fearless storytelling.

In 2003, she appeared in The Gathering, I Love Your Work, and Woody Allen’s Anything Else, where A.O. Scott commended her performance. That same year she appeared in Monster as Tyria Moore, earning critical praise as an “unsung hero” alongside Charlize Theron.

Ricci contributed vocals to Beck’s 2005 track “Hell Yes” and starred in the horror film Cursed. She was Emmy-nominated for her guest role on Grey’s Anatomy. In 2006’s Penelope, she wore prosthetics to play the titular character and received reviews praising her grounded performance. Also that year she delivered a memorable performance as Rae Doole in Black Snake Moan, earning descriptions like “fearless” and “brilliantly committed,” as well as appearing in Home of the Brave.

In 2008, Ricci starred in Speed Racer, which has since gained a cult reputation, and appeared in New York, I Love You. She had supporting roles in Saving Grace and After.Life in 2009, then made her Broadway debut in Time Stands Still in 2010, overcoming stage fright to deliver a confident and appealing performance.

She moved on to Bucky Larson: Born to Be a Star (2011) and starred in Pan Am (2011–2012), although the series was canceled after one season. She returned to the stage in A Midsummer Night’s Dream (2012) and appeared onscreen in Bel Ami and Around the Block.

Ricci later voiced characters in The Smurfs 2 and The Hero of Color City, and starred as Lizzie Borden in Lizzie Borden Took an Ax and its follow-up series (2014–2015), which she also produced. Her portrayal earned her a Screen Actors Guild nomination.

She also appeared in Mothers and Daughters (2016) and portrayed Zelda Fitzgerald in Z: The Beginning of Everything, which she produced. Critics called her work a standout, highlighting it as her best showcase since Monster.

In 2018, she starred in the thriller Distorted, and later appeared in The Matrix Resurrections (2021) and Monstrous (2022). Her performance in Monstrous was praised for how effectively she conveyed terror and emotion.

Since 2021, Ricci stars as Misty Quigley in Yellowjackets, earning an Emmy nomination for her nuanced, complex portrayal. She joined Wednesday (2022) as schoolteacher Marilyn Thornhill, earning accolades for her performance alongside Jenna Ortega.

In 2023, she voiced Harley Quinn in the podcast Harley Quinn and The Joker: Sound Mind and appeared in Doja Cat’s “Demons” music video. Her portrayal was described by Rolling Stone as a “stunning flex of macabre.”

Ricci has no formal acting training, instead developing her own intuitive method over time. She earned a reputation in the 1990s as a goth icon, inspiring filmmaker Tim Burton, who praised her “ambiguous quality.” She’s also been vocal about early typecasting struggles and personal challenges, including anxiety and anorexia.

Ricci holds multiple tattoos inspired by her favorite stories and themes, and is frequently featured in the work of artist Mark Ryden, considered one of his muses.
