Channarayapatna Ashwath, affectionately known as C. Ashwath, was an eminent Indian music composer, singer, and a revered exponent of Bhavageete, a genre of expressive poetry in the Kannada language. Born on December 29, 1939, in Channarayapatna near Devanahalli, he hailed from a culturally rich family background. His upbringing in Bangalore’s Chamarajpete area nurtured his early exposure to traditional influences.
After completing his education at Acharaya Pathashala School in NR Colony, C. Ashwath pursued a degree in Science from National College, Basavanagudi. He embarked on a career at Indian Telephone Industries, serving for 27 years and eventually retiring as an Executive Engineer in 1992. His musical journey commenced under the tutelage of Hindustani music maestro Devagiri Shankara Joshi.
C. Ashwath made a significant mark in the Kannada film industry through his musical compositions. His debut independent venture as a music composer was for the film “Kakana Kote,” followed by impactful compositions in movies such as “Chinnari Mutha,” “Santha Shishunala Sharief,” “Mysoora Mallige,” “Kotreshi Kanasu,” “Nagamandala,” and others.
Notably, he gained acclaim for his musical contributions to “Mysooru Mallige,” an adaptation of renowned poet K.S. Narasimhaswamy’s classic work, and for interpreting the works of the revered Kannada saint Santa Shishunala Sharifa through his compositions.
