Bharat Shah, who was born on August 5, 1944, is an Indian businessman who specializes in diamond trading. He also finances and distributes Hindi films under the VIP Films name.
Among the Bollywood movies he has produced are Dil Se (1998), which starred Shah Rukh Khan and Manisha Koirala. Rascals (2011) starring Sanjay Dutt, Ajay Devgn, and Kangana Ranaut; and Devdas (2002) starring Khan, Madhuri Dixit, and Aishwarya Rai.
Following an investigation into whether Chori Chori Chupke Chupke, a movie he financed, was supported by the Indian mafia, Shah was taken into custody in 2001.
After being detained, Nazim Rizwi, a fellow producer, was found guilty in 2003 of concealing his ties to the Indian mafia.
Rizwi and Abdul Rahim Allahbaksh Khan, his assistant, were also found guilty of establishing connections with the Indian mafia in order to demand money from movie stars.
Shah was given a one-year prison sentence, but as he had already spent fourteen months behind bars during his trial, he was released Both Rizwi and Khan received sentences of ₹ 15 lakhs in fines in addition to six years of hard incarceration.
