Barbara Sukowa is a German singer and actress who was born on February 2, 1950. In addition to being nominated for European Film Awards, François Awards, and Grammy Awards, she has won three German Film Awards for Best Actress, three Bavarian Film Awards, the Cannes Film Festival Award for Best Actress, and the Venice Film Festival Award.
Sukowa’s collaboration with directors Margarethe von Trotta and Rainer Werner Fassbinder is what made her most famous. She became well-known after appearing in Fassbinder’s West German miniseries Berlin Alexanderplatz. The same year, she starred in his drama picture Lola, for which she won her first German picture Award for Best Actress. Sukowa also acted in Margarethe von Trotta’s Marianne and Juliane in 1981. They would collaborate on six more films after that. She also won the Venice Film Festival Award for Best Actress and the German Film Award for her performance. Her portrayal in the drama Rosa Luxemburg earned her the 1986 Cannes Film Festival Award for Best Actress.
