Indian artist, illustrator, novelist, and storyteller Badri Narayan was born on July 22, 1929, and died on September 23, 2013. Without any professional instruction, Narayan started painting. In 1949, he had his first public exhibition, and in 1954, he had a solo display. In addition to having more than 50 solo exhibitions, his work is in a number of collections, such as the South Asian Collection at the Philadelphia Museum of Art, the National Gallery of Modern Art, and the National Museum in New Delhi.
His early work on ceramics and tile influenced some of his later watercolours. With their straightforward contours and approachable subject matter in two-dimensional stylized depictions, his paintings are charming and personal, frequently containing a hint of imagination. His main mediums were watercolor and ink or pastel.
In addition, he penned poetry and short stories and drew children’s books. In addition to receiving other honors, including as the Padma Shri in 1987 and the Maharashtra Gourav Puruskar in 1990, he was the focus of a documentary broadcast by Mumbai All India Radio. Badri Narayan passed away in a Bangalore hospital on September 23, 2013, from fragile health.
