Asif Basra (27 July 1967 – 12 November 2020) was an Indian actor known for his work in Bollywood films and TV serials. He gained recognition among Western audiences for his role in “Outsourced.” Basra also appeared in numerous other films. Tragically, he died by suicide through hanging in 2020.
Born on 27 July 1967 in Amravati, Maharashtra, India, Basra moved to Mumbai in 1989 to attend Mumbai University. During his time there, he participated in college productions and earned acclaim for his performances, often winning prizes. He graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in Physics.
Basra’s notable film credits include performances in Anurag Kashyap’s “Black Friday” and Rahul Dholakia’s “Parzania,” both of which received significant critical acclaim. He also appeared in Michael O. Sajbeland’s “One Night with the King” alongside veteran actors Omar Sharif and Peter O’Toole. His roles in Hindi movies like “Lamhaa” and “Once Upon a Time in Mumbaai” were also well-received. Additionally, Basra was known for his theatrical work, including portraying five characters in Feroz Abbas Khan’s production of “Mahatma v/s Gandhi” and playing a child with spina bifida in “Main Bhi Superman,” as well as portraying Horatio in “Hamlet.”
In 2020, Basra appeared in two web series: “Paatal Lok,” which streamed on Amazon Prime, and “Hostages” on Hotstar. He worked in Hindi, Gujarati, Tamil, and Malayalam films. His last appearance was in the second season of the Amazon Prime Video web series “The Family Man,” which was released on 4 June 2021.
Basra’s life came to a tragic end when he was found hanging in a private complex in McLeod Ganj, Dharamshala, Himachal Pradesh on 12 November 2020. The investigation into his death did not yield conclusive results, and the case was subsequently closed.
