Indian classical sarod player Ustad Amjad Ali Khan was born on October 9, 1945, and is renowned for his quick and clear ekhara taans. Born into a family of classical musicians (the Bangash lineage of the Senia Gharana), Khan has been performing all over the world since the 1960s. Padma Vibhushan, India’s second-highest civilian honor, was given to him in 2001. Padma Bhushan, India’s third-highest civilian honor, was given to him in 1991. In 1975, he received the Padma Shree.
The descendants of Tansen, the mystical musician who was one of the ‘Nav-ratna’ (nine gems) in the court of the Mughal Emperor Akbar, trained Hafiz Ali Khan. Amjad is therefore a member of the Tansen family. After Hafiz Ali Khan’s friends persuaded him of the value of formal education for his son, Amjad was brought to meet with the principal of the Modern School in New Delhi and accepted as a day scholar. He studied at Modern School from 1958 and 1963.
