After Sasi introduced him to Kathir, Karunakaran launched his career as a clap director for Kadhal Desam (1996).Before making his directorial debut with Tholi Prema (1998), he assisted Bhagyaraj and Shankar. While still in Madras, he came up with the story, and after seeing Pawan Kalyan in a magazine, he cast him.Tholi Prema was a hit at the box office.Yuvakudu, his second film, was Bhumika Chawla’s debut. The movie didn’t do well. Although his subsequent movie Vasu (2002) did not perform well at the box office, it eventually developed a cult following.
In comparison to Tholi Prema, Karunakaran and Pawan Kalyan’s 2005 film Balu ABCDEFG was a disaster.Happy (2006), a movie office hit based on the Tamil film Azhagiya Theeye (2004), came out the following year. Ullasamga Utsahamga (2008), starring debutant Yasho Sagar, received praise for Karunakaran. The 2010 film Darling received favourable reviews. Then he directed a bilingual film with the Telugu and Tamil titles Endhukante Premanta and Yen Endral Kadhal Enben. While the Tamil version was never released, the Telugu version was released to mixed reviews.Tej I Love You (2018) and Chinnadana Nee Kosam (2014) both received negative reviews.
