Leon James is an Indian singer-composer who has worked on Telugu and Tamil movies. His first credit came from writing two songs for Raghava Lawrence’s 2015 Tamil film Kanchana 2. Later, he gained recognition for his role in Ko 2. (2016) Because his father Noel James worked in the music business as A. R. Rahman’s manager, Leon James developed an interest in music and started taking piano lessons at the age of three.
He and Anirudh Ravichander remained close friends after playing together in the school band Zinx. Along with Aalap Raju, Prakash Hariharan, and Jeoraj George, he is currently a member of Project Yuj, a “neo-Carnatic funk” group. The group released an independent album in November 2014. Leon’s first job as a composer was as a keyboardist for stage productions and movie albums that were composed by Thaman, Anirudh Ravichander, and Santhosh Narayanan.
After Raghava Lawrence, who was working on his horror-comedy Kanchana 2, noticed Leon James’s work, he made a breakthrough in the Tamil film industry (2015). Leon wrote a romantic melody song that Lawrence had heard on YouTube and wanted to have adapted for his movie. Lawrence then hired Leon to work on the soundtrack.
Shakthisree Gopalan’s rendition of the song “Vaayaa En Veera” received favorable reviews; Karthik Srinivasan of The Hindu observed that Leon’s “sound is fresh, and purposefully cluttered,” and that “his music seems very new-agey.”He then requested that Leon compose another upbeat song for the movie’s ending, and as a result, “Sandi Muni” was created. After that, the movie turned out to be one of the most successful projects of the year, and critics acknowledged Leon’s contribution.
He collaborated with vocalist Andrea Jeremiah to record the song “Ezhunthu Vaa” shortly after the movie’s April 2015 release, with the goal of promoting female empowerment. Producer Elred Kumar signed him to work on the entire album for the political thriller Ko 2 (2015) because of the success of his work on his debut album. The Ko 2 album comprised six tracks, including a promotional song called “Unnai Maatrinal” that was released ahead of schedule in honor of former Indian President Abdul Kalam.
The lyrics of the song were taken directly from his speeches. Bollywood performers Vishal Dadlani, Salim Merchant, and Neeti Mohan contributed vocals to the album, and Leon James himself recorded a few tracks as well. Additionally, Harish Sivaramakrishnan of the Bangalore-based rock band Agam and London-based singer Inno Genga were introduced by Leon James for their respective first songs in the Tamil film industry.
