Biography:

Idrissa Akuna Elba was born on September 6, 1972, in Hackney, London, to Winston, a Sierra Leonean who worked at the Ford Dagenham plant, and Eve, a Ghanaian woman. His parents had married in Sierra Leone before moving to the UK. Raised in Hackney and East Ham, he shortened his name to “Idris” while attending school in Canning Town, where he first became interested in acting. His early break came after answering a casting ad in The Stage, which led to his first agent. In 1986, he began DJing with his uncle, eventually launching his own company with friends. He briefly studied at Barking and Dagenham College before leaving school in 1988. A Prince’s Trust grant helped him join the National Youth Music Theatre. To sustain himself in his early career, he worked odd jobs, including tyre-fitting, cold-calling, and night shifts at Ford, while DJing under the name “Big Driis.”

Elba’s first acting experiences were in Crimewatch reconstructions and children’s drama The Boot Street Band (1994). In 1995, he had his first significant television role in Bramwell and appeared on Absolutely Fabulous. Through the 1990s, he appeared on The Bill, Family Affairs, Ultraviolet, and Dangerfield. After moving to New York, he performed in Troilus and Cressida (2001) and began taking American TV roles. He gained widespread recognition as Stringer Bell in HBO’s The Wire (2002–2004) and also starred in the Jamaican film One Love (2003).

His career expanded with roles such as Captain Augustin Muganza in Sometimes in April (2005), Charlie Gotso in The No. 1 Ladies’ Detective Agency (2008), and Charles Miner on NBC’s The Office (2009). In 2010, he debuted as John Luther in the BBC crime thriller Luther, a role that won him a Golden Globe. In film, Elba starred in Daddy’s Little Girls (2007), 28 Weeks Later (2007), This Christmas (2007), RocknRolla (2008), Obsessed (2009), The Losers (2010), Takers (2010), and as Heimdall in Marvel’s Thor (2011). He later starred in Prometheus (2012), Pacific Rim (2013), Thor: The Dark World (2013), No Good Deed (2014), and Beasts of No Nation (2015), earning Golden Globe and BAFTA nominations.

Elba expanded into voice acting with roles in Zootopia (2016), The Jungle Book (2016), and Finding Dory (2016), and appeared as Krall in Star Trek Beyond (2016). His later film work includes The Dark Tower (2017), Molly’s Game (2017), Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw (2019), Cats (2019), The Suicide Squad (2021), and as the voice of Knuckles in Sonic the Hedgehog 2 (2022). He reprised Knuckles in a solo series for Paramount+ and in Sonic the Hedgehog 3 (2024). He also lent his voice and likeness to Solomon Reed in Cyberpunk 2077: Phantom Liberty (2023).

In 2025, Elba portrayed the Prime Minister of the UK in Heads of State and the President of the U.S. in A House of Dynamite. In November 2024, it was announced he would play Duncan, Man-At-Arms, in Amazon Prime’s Masters of the Universe.
