Bakkiyaraj Kannan (born on April 2, 1987) is a filmmaker in the Tamil cinema industry. He has directed two films to date: Remo (2016) and Sulthan (2021).
He tied the knot with Asha in October 2020.
Kannan began his journey in the film industry while studying at S.R.M. College and the MGR Film and Television Institute. He started his career as an assistant director, working under Atlee for the film Raja Rani (2013).
He made his directorial debut with Remo in 2016, starring Sivakarthikeyan and Keerthy Suresh. The movie was a commercial hit and earned Kannan a nomination for Best Tamil Debut Director at the 6th South Indian International Movie Awards. He also won the Edison Award for Best Debut Director for the same film.
His second directorial venture, Sulthan (2021), featured Karthi and Rashmika Mandanna in the lead roles. The film received mixed to positive reviews and performed reasonably well at the box office.
On April 14, 2024, it was announced that Kannan would helm a new project titled Benz, produced under Lokesh Kanagaraj’s banner, G Squad, with Raghava Lawrence in the lead. Later, on October 30, 2024, it was confirmed that Benz would be part of the Lokesh Cinematic Universe.
