Disney+ Hotstar“Reeta Sanyal” is the type of legal crime drama that, after it is over, is quickly forgotten. The drama, which is based on Amir Khan’s “Reeta Sanyal Ke Mukaddamein” book series, is a patience test and lacks the seriousness that one would expect from a serious legal crime thriller. The protagonist and antagonist are introduced through excessive use of drama, yet the strategy falls flat. The series’s title, however, is its most serious flaw. There is nothing in the episode that links the character to Bengal, even though Sanyal is a Bengali surname. Actually, there is no cultural tie at all, and the lead doesn’t say a single word in Bengali.
As lawyer Reeta Sanyal (Adah Sharma) defends Rocky, a dog accused of scaling a five-foot fence and giving birth to four puppies, the story begins lightheartedly. The family of the other dog is requesting compensation in the amount of one million rupees. Reeta meets Keshav outside the court after winning the case; Keshav’s mother was arrested for the murder of local MLA Parav Rane. Keshav admits that he, not his mother, carried out the crime when Reeta questions him about it, saying he carried out the “perfect murder.” Reeta quickly learns that M Raj Thakral (Rahul Dev), a guy with whom she has a complex past, is her opponent when she takes on Keshav’s case.
Although Adah Sharma seems comfortable in the part, she doesn’t contribute much above the character’s surface level, and her effort at humor is unsuccessful. Rahul Dev’s somber and severe portrayal of Thakral evokes a sense of threat, but the film’s entertainment value ultimately prevents it from being a compelling courtroom drama. The authors have done a respectable job of establishing Reeta Sanyal as a new lawyer hoping for a big case. However, rather than anticipating a high-concept legal thriller, it would be prudent to watch this series for its own sake.
The way that Reeta Sanyal challenges the legal system from the very first scene reveals a lot about the creators’ and authors’ goals. It seems strange that a female martial arts expert named Zi (played by Nirisha Basnett) is sent to murder Keshav. Suspense and intrigue may have been developed more effectively with that time. All things considered, “Reeta Sanyal” comes across as amateurish, and if the first two episodes are any guide, viewers may expect a difficult journey.
