Uppu Kappurambu is a film directed by Ani IV Sasi. Featuring Keerthy Suresh and Suhas in lead roles, the film, generated interest with its unique trailer. The film is currently streaming on Amazon Prime Video. Lets see how well this satirical comedy connects with the audience.
Story: After her father’s death, Apoorva (Keerthy Suresh) unexpectedly becomes the village head. Her first challenge? The cremation ground in the village has space left for only four more graves. The story unfolds around how Apoorva deals with this situation and how Chinna (Suhas) helps her tackle it.
Performances: Suhas once again shines with his natural acting, breathing life into the character of Chinna. Initially appearing as an innocent guy, his character’s emotional transformation after his mother’s death is moving. He excels particularly in emotional scenes.
On the other hand, Keerthy Suresh experiments with body language-driven comedy for the first time. While she puts in visible effort, it doesn’t fully land, making some scenes feel a bit awkward for the viewers. However, her screen presence remains a major plus.
Shatru tries a different kind of comedy from his usual style. Babu Mohan, seen after a long time in a meaningful role, could have been given more dialogues. Duvvasi Mohan’s voice being dubbed by someone else felt like a drawback.
Technical Aspects: The story is by Vasanth, known for “Cinema Bandi” and “Shubham”. The core concept is intriguing, However, the establishment of the problem in the screenplay wasn’t quite effective.
If the director had fleshed out the village and its people better, the slapstick humor would have landed more strongly.
The first half feels slow as it spends too much time on character setups. But in the second half, the director focuses more on the core point without unnecessary diversions and elevates the central theme well.
The film cleverly questions human nature: Why do people hesitate to help others, but panic when it comes to their own death? The BGM is good and so were the visuals. Also, the production values are neat.
Analysis: Some movies make you laugh while others make you think. Uppu Kappurambu falls into the latter category. It raises important questions like: Shouldn’t we think about helping others in distress? What do we really gain by always thinking selfishly?
While the intent is commendable, the slapstick comedy could have been more effectively executed to make it more enjoyable for a wider audience. Also, Amazon deserves praise for backing such regional films, especially in Telugu, with such a strong cast and unique storyline.
Verdict: Overall, If the emotional angle had been driven a bit deeper and the comedy more balanced, Uppu Kappurambu could have turned out to be a truly memorable film but sadly that does not happen.
Bottom Line: Has its moments
