OTT“Vyavastha,” available on Zee5, unfolds a gripping legal drama that navigates the intricate dynamics between arrangement and system. Directed by Anand Ranga, the series introduces a compelling twist from the start—a young, inexperienced lawyer daring to challenge his own formidable boss. Sampath Kumar assumes the role of Avinash Chakraborty, a relentless lawyer known for his unwavering determination to secure victories at any cost. However, the equilibrium of Chakraborty’s world is disrupted when Vamsi Krishna, his employee’s son and a freshly graduated, principled lawyer, chooses to stand against him.
The storyline takes a dramatic turn when Yamini (Hebah Patel) gets arrested on her wedding night, accused of her husband’s murder. Initially seeking Chakraborty’s representation, she later opts for Vamsi, introducing a layer of personal history between them. As the narrative unfolds, the series delves into the power struggle and conflicts between junior and senior lawyers—a chess game played with intensity both inside and outside the courtroom.
Karthik Rathnam and Sampath Kumar deliver stellar performances, infusing life into the clash between the two main characters. While the series commences on a strong note with a realistic setting and commendable intent, it grapples with a gradual loss of momentum in later episodes. Drawing parallels to renowned shows like “Suits” and “Better Call Saul,” the legal drama promises the elements of an intriguing series but falls short in execution, particularly in handling subplots, conflicts, and resolutions.
Despite its flaws, Rathnam leaves a lasting impression with his portrayal of Vamsi—a young lawyer driven by a determination to make a positive impact. Sampath Raj, in the role of the ruthless and greedy lawyer Chakraborty, adds a larger-than-life presence to the series. Supporting cast members, including Hebah Patel and Kamna Jethamalini, contribute commendable performances within the constraints of their characters.
While the series could have greatly benefited from improved execution and screenplay, it manages to provide ample drama and thrill, making it a worthwhile watch. The eight episodes, aptly titled “Nobody Messes With Me,” “No Smoke Without Fire,” “A Lawyer by Force,” “Soft Target,” “Behind Bars,” “Tears and Confessions,” “Road Block,” and “Not A Clean Verdict,” present a well-rounded mix of engaging content. The conflicts and politics within the law firm Checkmate’s office, though deserving more intricacy, add another layer to the storyline. Nevertheless, the series, buoyed by a commendable background score and cinematography, successfully presents a compelling narrative within the legal realm.
