Theatre“Samudram,” a 1999 Indian Telugu-language action film, was produced by J. Bhagavan and D. V. V. Danayya under the Sri Balaji Art Creations banner and directed by Krishna Vamsi. The film features Jagapati Babu, Sakshi Shivanand, Srihari, Prakash Raj, and Ravi Teja in pivotal roles, with music composed by Shashi Preetam. Notably, the film received three state Nandi Awards.
The story kicks off with the introduction of Sagar, a convict, as he is being transferred to Vizag Central Jail. In his desperate attempt to escape, he faces brutality and is subsequently placed in solitary confinement.
The narrative then takes us back to Sagar’s past. He is a carefree young man who lives with his widowed mother, sister Chanti, girlfriend Rajyalakshmi, and a group of close friends. Meanwhile, there is a menacing figure in Chepala Krishna, a criminal and smuggler with political aspirations. His younger brother, Chepala Nani, is a troublemaker who terrorizes the local community. Sagar crosses paths with Nani, unwittingly marking himself as a target.
On the other side of the law, we meet C.I. Srihari, a resolute police officer newly assigned to the area. He takes on Chepala Krishna’s criminal activities with the assistance of trustworthy S.I. Krishnam Raju. In a tactical move, Srihari manages to apprehend Krishna for a minor offense just as he is about to enter the political arena, effectively disqualifying him from any elections for the next five years. This infuriates Krishna and Nani, setting the stage for revenge.
Sagar is busy preparing for his sister Chanti’s engagement. On the day of the engagement, Sagar is entrusted with valuable jewelry. Simultaneously, Srihari and his team go after Nani. However, a shocking twist occurs when it is revealed that Krishnam Raju is a traitor who turns on Srihari, resulting in a fatal confrontation. Sagar, who happens to pass by, attempts to come to Srihari’s aid, but it proves too late. Sagar is wrongfully framed for the crime and subsequently sentenced to life in prison. A humble constable named Nukaraju, who deeply admires the late Srihari, comes forward to disclose crucial information. Amidst the chaos, Nani attempts to harm Chanti, resulting in injuries to Sagar’s mother, who is subsequently hospitalized.
Sagar is granted permission to visit his ailing mother, and with Nukaraju’s assistance, he manages to escape permanently. Determined to dismantle Chepala Krishna’s empire, Sagar embarks on a quest for vengeance. Meanwhile, Nukaraju is suspended for his involvement in Sagar’s escape. However, during the ensuing investigation, he becomes suspicious about the circumstances surrounding Srihari’s death, leading him to initiate a formal inquiry. Sagar, on the other hand, kidnaps Nani and Krishnam Raju. As the truth unravels, Nukaraju exposes the real facts in court, securing Sagar’s acquittal from the murder charges. In a touching twist, Sagar encourages Nukaraju to marry his sister Chanti, bringing justice and closure to the story.
