“Potugadu,” a Kannada remake of “Govindaya Namaha,” stars Manoj and 4 heroines. Despite a quick shoot and big budget, it achieved only lukewarm “semi-hit” status at the box office. Govinda, a young man on the brink of suicide, seeks solace in a final drink at a desolate spot. Coincidentally, VenkataRathnam arrives with the same intent. As they share their stories, Govinda reveals four failed love affairs. His first romance with Vaidehi, a wealthy Brahmin’s daughter, is thwarted by her father’s disapproval. He then finds solace in Mumtaz, but his drunken insults shatter their relationship.
Angered by Govinda’s self-pity, Venkata Rathnam attacks him. In retaliation, Govinda reveals he has ingested poison, prompting Venkata Rathnam to rush him to the hospital. Little do they know, Mumtaz works there as a nurse and witnesses Govinda’s confession and remorse behind a wall. This unexpected twist sets the stage for a story of redemption, second chances, and the unexpected connections that bind us. Govinda’s next love affair is with Stacy, a foreigner engaged to his boss. Driven by greed, he devises a plan to separate the couple and steal her expensive ring. However, he abandons her once he learns she threw the ring away in frustration.
Finally, Govinda experiences true love with Mary. He transforms himself, leading a normal life until the shocking truth unfolds: Mary runs a brothel and traffics young girls. Devastated, Govinda agrees to work for her under false pretenses, tasked with transporting girls to her establishment. When authorities confront Govinda, he offers to help liberate the girls. After a perilous rescue mission involving a container and a violent confrontation, all the girls are freed. Filled with guilt and heartbreak, Govinda contemplates suicide.
On the verge of ending it all, Govinda reveals his past to Venkata Rathnam. He admits to leaving Vaidehi to protect her family and to separating his boss and Stacy to prevent him from abandoning his parents. At the last moment, Mumtaz intervenes, reminding Govinda of her unwavering love despite his past mistakes. Their reconciliation offers a ray of hope amidst the darkness. Venkata Rathnam, witnessing their reunion, departs with renewed hope for finding love himself. His chance encounter with a woman who accepts his proposal brings his own journey to a heartwarming conclusion.
While Govinda’s journey is marked by mistakes and regrets, ultimately, it is a story of redemption, forgiveness, and the enduring power of love. He learns to confront his past, find solace in genuine connection, and embrace a future with newfound purpose. In turn, Venkata Rathnam’s own quest for love finds a hopeful resolution, leaving the audience with a sense of optimism and the possibility of happy endings.
