“Jaanu” is a romantic drama film in Telugu, released in 2020, directed and written by C. Prem Kumar and Hrishikesh Bhargava. It stands as a remake of the director’s own Tamil creation, ’96 (2018). Produced by Dil Raju’s Sri Venkateswara Creations, the film features Sharwanand and Samantha Ruth Prabhu and revolves around a reunion of former classmates fifteen years after their graduation.
The protagonist, K. Ramachandra, known as Ram, is a travel photographer who, overwhelmed by nostalgia, revisits his high school. The reunion, facilitated through their school WhatsApp group, becomes a pivotal moment for Ram as he reconnects with friends Murali, Subhashini, and Sathish. The catalyst for emotional resolution arrives when Ram learns that Janaki, or Jaanu, is attending the reunion from Singapore.
Ram and Jaanu, once friends and classmates in tenth grade, had a special connection. Jaanu, a talented singer, reciprocated Ram’s love. After their board exams, a poignant moment ensued, with Jaanu urging Ram not to forget her until their reunion after the holidays. At the reunion, Jaanu searches for Ram, triggering memories of their shared past.
She recalls the first day of 11th grade, waiting for Ram who never arrived. The revelation that Ram left school due to financial difficulties and relocated to Hyderabad overnight leaves Jaanu heartbroken, fostering a sense of longing until the completion of her school days. Upon finally meeting, Ram and Jaanu’s initial interactions are awkward, gradually evolving as they delve into their past.
Friends share details about Jaanu’s married life, while it becomes apparent that Ram is still single and hasn’t moved on. Following the reunion party, Ram and Jaanu embark on a drive, where Jaanu confides in Ram about her enduring feelings and the circumstances that led her to marry someone else. Ram, in turn, reveals his unrequited attempt to meet Jaanu during her college days.
Jaanu is devastated to learn that she misunderstood Ram’s intentions, thinking he was a stalker. Ram expresses his knowledge of her life but admits his mistake in assuming she hated him. Both grapple with the unfortunate turns in their lives and come to terms with their shared history. Acknowledging their misfortune, Jaanu expresses a desire to spend the remaining hours with Ram before her flight back home.
The duo explores the city, sharing memories at a restaurant, and encounters Ram’s photography students who assume Jaanu is his wife. Jaanu improvises a story about their meeting and reconciliation, playing along with Ram. Later, at Ram’s apartment, Jaanu urges him to move on, sing his favorite song, and shares memories from their past.
The poignant moments emphasize their limited time together. As Jaanu departs at the airport, bidding a tearful farewell, the film concludes with Ram returning home to find Jaanu’s clothes. Folding them alongside cherished school memories, the screen fades to black, symbolizing the closure of this bittersweet chapter in their lives.
