It’s been four years since Ajith Kumar hit the screens. After Nerkonda Parvai, which was a remake of Pink, all his films flopped. Ajith’s fans are eagerly waiting for his comeback film. Good Bad Ugly, directed by Adhik Ravichandran, has good expectations from everyone. The trailer worked out at the peak level. Let’s see how impressive the film is.
Good Bad Ugly Story: AK (Ajith Kumar), who was once a big don, goes to jail, leaving everything behind for the sake of his unborn child and tied-up wife. AK wants to come out and celebrate his son Vihaan’s (Kartikeya Dev) 18th birthday. Cut to later, AK arrives in Spain, and Vihaan is arrested by the police in a drug case. What exactly is AK’s past? Why has he become such a powerful don? How did he get his son Vihaan out of jail? What were the difficulties faced in this process? This is the plot of Good Bad Ugly.
Performances: The film is a good dinner for Ajith fans—especially the hardcore fans who have been following Ajith from the beginning. Not only do they connect to the references in the film, but they also enjoy it to the fullest. Ajith put aside his ideologies and appeared in a full mass role after a long time to please his fans. If so… only Tamil fans can connect with those references, and in Telugu, those references don’t work out much. Arjun Das got a full-length villain role after a long time. He has cultivated the character wonderfully. Arjun Das’s best intro is in this film. His character arc is also good. The characters of Trisha, Sunil, and Prasanna are decent. Simran’s character has worked out well. Jackie Shroff, Tinu Anand, and others—their characters did not ripen properly.
Technical Aspects: GV Prakash Kumar’s music is the main asset of the film. The way Ajith has remastered old super hit songs has also exploded. The songs and background music elevated the narrative. Abhinandan Ramanujan’s cinematography work is also good. The production design & artwork are very supportive, and the producers have not compromised on the cost, which is a plus for the film. Korean actor Dongli, American action character John Wick, and professor characters with Spanish references have been used for elevation.
Analysis: Director Adhik Ravichandran has given more importance to satisfying Ajith’s fans than to storytelling. Especially the second half is going somewhere. Although it’s important to have a little Hollywood & Netflix touch to make sense of them. Even if you don’t have those contacts, you can enjoy that pure senseless mass happily.
There are a lot of problems with the story, narrative, and character arcs. Adhik Ravichandran was 100% successful in entertaining the audience for two and a half hours. Some of the mass films are enjoyed regardless of the story and the narrative. There are so many whistle-worthy moments that the fans will like but they are also overhyped after a point. The emotions are not that great in a few places.
Good Bad Ugly is a film that goes beyond routine. But the way Ajith has recreated references to old movies, especially his super hit songs and mannerisms, is hilariously entertaining. So… Ajith & Adhik’s magic can be enjoyed happily, regardless of the logic of the film.
Verdict: Overall, Good Bad Ugly is an ode to Ajith’s career and is a film for the fans. The director pays rich tribute to the star and fans will have a ride. But for others, the film is strictly ordinary.
Bottom Line: Only for Ajith fans
Good Bad Ugly Rating: 2.5/5
