Udayan Prasad

Biography:

Udayan Prasad is a British director and filmmaker of Indian descent who has worked in British, Indian, and international cinema. The man was born in India but received education at National Film and Television School (NFTS) in the UK. Having started his career as a director of short films and TV series, he switched to feature films later on. Prasad debuted as a director of features with the film Brothers in Trouble (1995), which was a drama about illegal Pakistani and South Asian immigrants in Britain and won Sutherland Trophy at the London Film Festival.

The film maker then went on to direct other notable films such as My Son the Fanatic (1997), which was an adaptation of Hanif Kureishi’s story, and The Yellow Handkerchief (2008) with stars William Hurt, Maria Bello, Kristen Stewart, and Eddie Redmayne. Migration issues, identity, families, cultural displacement and relations between members of different cultures are among the most common themes of Prasad’s works.Prasad has also worked as a director of various television shows and international productions.

Apart from working on British television productions, he has done various projects related to Indian cinema. These projects include such praised television movies as 102 Boulevard Haussmann (1991) and his contribution to Alan Bennett’s Talking Heads 2, as well as international comedy-drama Opa! (2005) and the sports drama Netflix series Selection Day (2018). Known for the sensitivity of the treatment of cultural identity and human relations, Udayan Prasad has formed his own style of filming combining Indian and Western perspective on the subject.
