Uday Kiran (June 26, 1980 – January 5, 2014) was an acclaimed Indian actor known for his work in Telugu and Tamil cinema. His initial films, including “Chitram” (2000), “Nuvvu Nenu” (2001), and “Manasantha Nuvve” (2001), enjoyed significant success, earning him the moniker of “Hat-trick Hero.” These romantic dramas established his image as a charming lover boy in the early 2000s.
In 2001, his portrayal in “Nuvvu Nenu” earned him the prestigious Filmfare Award for Best Actor – Telugu, making him the youngest recipient of this accolade. Following this, he starred in other hit romantic ventures like “Kalusukovalani” (2002) and “Nee Sneham” (2002), along with notable appearances in films such as “Sreeram” (2002) and “Avunanna Kadanna” (2005).
His foray into Tamil cinema began with “Poi” (2006) directed by veteran K. Balachander. However, many of his later films post-2005, like “Nuvvekkadunte Nenakkadunta” (2012) and “Jai Sriram” (2013), did not fare well commercially.
Born to V. V. K. Murthy and Nirmala in Vijayawada, Uday Kiran pursued his education at K V Picket School and Wesley Degree College in Secunderabad. He had an older brother and sister, with his mother passing away during his childhood. Notably, singer Parnika is his maternal cousin.
Beginning his career as a model during college, Kiran made his acting debut in the Hinglish film “Mysterious Girl” (1999). However, it was his Telugu debut with “Chitram” (2000) that catapulted him to fame, followed by the consecutive successes of “Nuvvu Nenu” and “Manasantha Nuvve.”
In addition to his film career, Uday Kiran’s personal life drew media attention, particularly his engagement to Chiranjeevi’s daughter Sushmitha in 2003, which was later called off. He eventually married Vishitha on October 24, 2012.
Tragically, Uday Kiran died by suicide on January 5, 2014, at his Hyderabad residence, at the age of 33. No suicide note was found, and authorities suspected financial difficulties as a possible motive. His passing deeply affected the film industry, with numerous prominent personalities paying their respects before his cremation. Additionally, a young fan of Kiran reportedly committed suicide in Vizianagaram, further underscoring the impact of his demise.
