Gopalarathnam, famously known as Typist Gopu, established himself as a revered Indian actor specializing in comedy and supporting roles, leaving an indelible mark on both stage and screen. His illustrious career spanned over 600 stage plays and featured appearances in 400 films, showcasing his versatile talent and widespread acclaim.

Hailing from Manakkal, Lalgudi in Trichy district, Gopalarathnam’s journey into the world of entertainment began during his B. Com. days at Vivekananda College, Chennai. His introduction to the stage came through his friend Nagesh’s drama troupe in 1955, marking the genesis of his prolific career.

In the iconic 1959 play “Nenje Nee Vaazhga,” Gopu portrayed the role of a typist, earning immense praise that led to him being affectionately known as “Typist” Gopu. His compelling performance not only garnered recognition but also solidified his stage presence.

Transitioning to the world of cinema, Gopu made his film debut in 1965 in K. Balachandar’s movie “Naanal,” marking the commencement of a successful cinematic journey. Collaborating with renowned actors of the era, he left an impression with his memorable performances. His association with Y. G. Mahendran’s United Amateur Artists further elevated his standing within the industry.

In recognition of his contributions, Gopu was honored with the prestigious Kalaimamani award in 2002, a testament to his immense talent and dedication to his craft. Even as acting opportunities dwindled, he continued to captivate audiences through his appearances in comedy television serials, showcasing his enduring charm and versatility.
