Actor Tobias Simpson Menzies was born in England on March 7, 1974. He was nominated for both the British Academy Television Award and the Golden Globe for his role as Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, in the third and fourth seasons of the television series The Crown. For this role, he won the Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Drama Series. Menzies, who previously portrayed Edmure Tully in Game of Thrones and Brutus in Rome, also portrayed Frank and Jonathan “Black Jack” Randall in Starz’s Outlander, for which he was nominated for a Golden Globe.
Menzies, the son of Peter Menzies and Gillian (née Simpson), was born in Hammersmith, London, England. [Reference required] His father was a BBC radio producer, and his mother taught. Luke is his younger brother and a solicitor. Menzies received instruction in the Steiner System, which incorporates movement, singing, and instrumental music, at the Perry Court Rudolf Steiner School in Canterbury, Kent. He then went to the Frensham Heights School in Surrey, which is close to Farnham, alongside Jim Sturgess and Hattie Morahan.
Before enrolling at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art and earning a BA in Acting (1998), Menzies studied at Deborah Moody’s Year Out Drama Company in Stratford-upon-Avon from 1993 to 1994. As part of a graduate program offered by RADA, Menzies took part in improvisation classes with The Spontaneity Shop, a British improvisation comedy company, after earning his bachelor’s degree.
