As a director, Nelson’s projects include Eye of God (1997), nominated for both the Sundance Grand Jury Prize and an Independent Spirit Award; O (2001), a contemporary adaptation of Othello; and The Grey Zone (2001), a Holocaust drama. Both Eye of God and The Grey Zone originated as his stage plays. Beyond film, he has co-directed music videos for Billy Woods, Kenny Segal, and Armand Hammer, including “Babylon by Bus,” “Soft Landing,” and “Trauma Mic.” His debut novel, City of Blows (2023), explores the fierce competition within Hollywood through the story of four men battling for control of a screenplay.
Nelson was born in Tulsa, Oklahoma, to a Jewish family. His mother, Ruth (née Kaiser), was a philanthropist and social activist, while his father, Don Nelson, was a geologist and oil wildcatter. His maternal uncle is businessman George Kaiser. His mother’s family, German Jews, fled Europe shortly before World War II—first moving to Britain in 1938, where Ruth was born, before immigrating to the U.S. in 1941. On his father’s side, his ancestors were Russian-Jewish immigrants.
He attended the Oklahoma Summer Arts Institute and graduated from Holland Hall School in 1982. At Brown University, he majored in classics, was elected to Phi Beta Kappa, and served as senior class orator in 1986, studying under philosopher Martha Nussbaum. He later trained at Juilliard as part of Group 19, graduating in 1990.
Nelson’s early works as a playwright include Eye of God (1992, Seattle Repertory Theatre), The Grey Zone (1996, MCC Theater in New York), and Anadarko (1998). On television, he co-starred in the sketch comedy show The Unnaturals (1989–1991). His breakthrough role as Delmar in O Brother, Where Art Thou? showcased his unique talents; notably, he was the only cast member to have read Homer’s Odyssey, the film’s inspiration. He also contributed vocals to the soundtrack, which won a Grammy in 2002. His film work has ranged from Holes and Lincoln to Marvel films such as The Incredible Hulk, Fantastic Four, and Captain America: Brave New World.
He has performed extensively in New York theater, appearing in productions with Playwrights Horizons, Manhattan Theater Club, New York Theatre Workshop, and Shakespeare in the Park. He has also directed screen adaptations of his plays (Eye of God, The Grey Zone) and original screenplays such as Kansas (1998) and Leaves of Grass (2009). His directing has earned awards including the Tokyo Bronze Prize and the Seattle International Film Festival’s Best Director Award.
On television, he has appeared in series like CSI: Crime Scene Investigation and the PBS documentary Frontline (My Brother’s Bomber), in which he reflected on the loss of his friend in the 1988 Pan Am Flight 103 bombing. In 2018, Nelson starred in the Coen brothers’ The Ballad of Buster Scruggs, a role he had been offered 16 years earlier. His other notable performances include Ralph Myers in Just Mercy (2019) and a stage play, Socrates (2019), which premiered at The Public Theater with critical acclaim.
Nelson resides in New York City with his wife, actress Lisa Benavides, and their three sons, including filmmaker Henry Nelson (Asleep in My Palm). He was inducted as an honorary member of Phi Beta Kappa at the University of Tulsa in 2009 and serves on the Board of Trustees at Bryn Mawr College, his mother’s alma mater.
