Biography:

Thotakura Venkata Raju, affectionately known as T. V. Raju, was a distinguished Indian music composer celebrated primarily for his contributions to Telugu cinema. Born in 1921, his musical journey began under the tutelage of P. Adinarayana Rao, where he served as an assistant composer on the film “Palletoori Pilla” (1950), even making a brief appearance on screen in a small role. However, it was with his independent debut as a music director in “Tingu Ranga” (1952), directed by B. A. Subba Rao, that Raju showcased his innate talent and began to make his mark in the industry.

Raju’s musical compositions left an indelible impression on audiences, with notable works in films such as “Panduranga Mahatyam” (1957), “Sri Krishna Pandaveeyam” (1966), and “Sri Krishnavataram” (1967), earning him widespread acclaim. He displayed remarkable versatility, particularly excelling in the social drama genre, as evidenced by his work in the 1961 film “Taxi Ramudu.”

His collaboration with renowned artists and production houses, including N. T. Rama Rao and “NAT Combines,” yielded numerous hits, further solidifying his status as a prolific music composer. Notably, Raju’s collaboration with legendary playback singer Mohammed Rafi for the 1969 film “Bhale Thammudu” added another feather to his cap, showcasing his ability to work with the finest talents in the industry.

On a personal note, Raju shared a close bond with N. T. Rama Rao, with whom he spent formative years as roommates during their early struggles in the Telugu film industry. Additionally, his legacy lives on through his son, Thotakura Somaraju, known professionally as Raj, who forms one half of the renowned music composing duo Raj-Koti, further highlighting the family’s enduring impact on the world of Telugu cinema.
