Thomas Kretschmann (born September 8, 1962) is a German actor known for his work in both European and American cinema. Some of his most notable performances include Lieutenant Hans von Witzland in Stalingrad (1993), Hauptmann Wilm Hosenfeld in The Pianist (2002), Hermann Fegelein in Downfall (2004), Captain Englehorn in King Kong (2005), Major Otto Remer in Valkyrie (2008), the voice of Professor Z in Cars 2 (2011), and journalist Jürgen Hinzpeter in A Taxi Driver (2017). He also portrayed Baron Wolfgang von Strucker in Marvel’s Captain America: The Winter Soldier (2014) and Avengers: Age of Ultron (2015).
Kretschmann has received two nominations for the Deutscher Fernsehpreis for Best Actor and has also been nominated for both the European Film Award and the Nika Award.
He began his acting career at 25, appearing in various European films and TV series such as Westler (1985). In 1991, he won the Max Ophüls Prize for Best Young Actor for Der Mitwisser. His breakthrough came with Stalingrad (1993), followed by international recognition for his role as the sadistic killer Alfredo Grossi in Dario Argento’s The Stendhal Syndrome.
Although well-known in Germany, Kretschmann gained Hollywood attention with his portrayal of Captain Wilm Hosenfeld in Roman Polanski’s The Pianist (2002). Since then, he has frequently played military figures in World War II-themed films, including his role as Hermann Fegelein in Downfall (2004).
Kretschmann’s U.S. television debut came in 2003 with guest appearances on 24, a role he later reprised in the 2006 video game adaptation. He also appeared in Relic Hunter and played Major Timothy Cain in Resident Evil: Apocalypse (2004). The same year, he starred in the French sci-fi film Immortal and later joined Peter Jackson’s King Kong (2005), reuniting with The Pianist co-star Adrien Brody.
In 2006, he earned critical praise for Butterfly: A Grimm Love Story (Rohtenburg), inspired by the real-life Armin Meiwes case. Despite being banned in Germany following Meiwes’s lawsuit, the film won Kretschmann and co-star Thomas Huber Best Actor awards at both the Sitges Film Festival and the Puchon International Fantastic Film Festival.
Kretschmann was initially cast as the voice of Johann Krauss in Hellboy II: The Golden Army (2008) but was later replaced by Seth MacFarlane. That same year, he appeared in Wanted alongside Angelina Jolie and Morgan Freeman and portrayed Major Otto Ernst Remer in Valkyrie. He also played Adolf Eichmann in the 2007 biographical film of the same name.
In 2009, he appeared in FlashForward and portrayed King Leopold I in The Young Victoria, which went on to win the Academy Award for Best Costume Design. He returned to German cinema with Rabbit Without Ears 2 and later starred in Jungle Child (2011), filmed in Malaysia. Kretschmann also voiced Professor Z in Pixar’s Cars 2 (2011) and starred as Captain Kurt Brynildson in the ABC series The River (2011–2012).
Kretschmann later joined the Marvel Cinematic Universe, signing a multi-film deal to play Baron Wolfgang von Strucker, debuting in Captain America: The Winter Soldier (2014) and reprising the role in Avengers: Age of Ultron (2015).
In addition to acting, he often provides the German-language dubbing for his own roles and has worked as a fashion model, including serving as the face of a Hugo Boss fragrance campaign.
