Following his graduation from Coimbatore’s Sarvajana High School in 1984, Thennavan relocated to Chennai in order to further his cinema career. In the 1990 film En Uyir Thozhan, directed by Bharathiraja, Thennavan made his acting debut in a supporting role.
After receiving praise from critics for his portrayal of Kai in Saran’s Gemini (2002), he started receiving credit for Kai Thennavan in other movies. The Hindu praised Vikram, who plays the title character’s sidekick, saying “he does a convincing job” and “his penetrating stare takes care of the expressions.” Due to the movie’s success, he was chosen by Kamal Haasan to star in Virumaandi, which also got great reviews.
