Suryakantham, a distinguished Indian actress renowned in Tollywood, etched her name in the annals of cinema for her portrayal of the quintessential cruel mother-in-law archetype. Born on October 28, 1924, and raised in a Telugu Brahmin family in Venkata Krishnaraya Puram near Kakinada, East Godavari district, Andhra Pradesh, Suryakantham’s early life was marked by a passion for dance and singing, which she cultivated from a young age.

In 1950, she entered matrimony with Peddibhotla Chalapati Rao, a High Court Judge, embarking on a journey that would see her leave an indelible mark on the silver screen.

Suryakantham’s foray into the world of cinema began as a dancer in “Chandralekha,” produced by Gemini Studios, where she earned a modest remuneration of Rs 75. Despite humble beginnings, her talent soon caught the eye of filmmakers, leading to her transition into character roles. Notably, her performance in “Narada Naradi” marked her debut as a character artist, setting the stage for a remarkable career ahead.

Despite facing setbacks, including a car accident that marred her facial features, Suryakantham’s determination remained unshaken. Refusing a leading role offered in Bollywood out of empathy for a fellow artist, she showcased integrity and compassion that set her apart in the industry.

It was her role in the Telugu film “Kodarikam” that catapulted her to newfound success, paving the way for collaborations with esteemed directors like B. Nagi Reddy and Chakrapani. Their collaboration on “Gundamma Katha,” featuring stalwarts like N. T. Rama Rao, Akkineni Nageswara Rao, and S.V. Ranga Rao, solidified Suryakantham’s status as a leading actress. Her portrayal of Gundamma, the titular character, resonated with audiences and contributed to the film’s commercial triumph.
