Sulochana Chavan, an eminent Indian singer renowned for her captivating lavanis in Marathi, left an indelible mark in the world of music. Her noteworthy lavanis, such as “Tuzhya Usala Laagal Kolha” and “Padarawarti Jartaricha” from the film “Malhari Martand” (1965) and “Solaawa Varees Dhokyacha” and “Kasa Kay Patil Bara Hay Ka?” from “Sawaal Majha Aika!” (1964), established her as a stalwart in this musical tradition. Beyond lavanis, she also recorded memorable Hindi film songs including “Chori Chori Aag Si Dil Mein Lagake,” “Ulfat Jisay Kehtay Hai Jeenay Ka Sahaara Hai,” “Mousam Aayaa Hai Rangeen,” and “Woh Aaye Hain Dil Ko Karar Aa Gaya Hai.”
Sulochana’s journey in the music realm commenced at a tender age. Beginning with local dramas and venturing into acting in Gujarati theatre, she expanded her repertoire by taking Urdu language lessons and working in Hindi-Urdu plays. Her career traversed various film industries, including Punjabi and Tamil cinema. Introduced to music director Shyambabu Pathak by makeup artist Shubam Dandekar, she commenced her musical training at V. Shantaram’s Rajkamal Studios. At 11, she made her professional singing debut in the movie “Krishna Sudama” (1947), credited as K. Sulochana before adopting her maiden name, Chavan.
