Subbiraj Kakkar, affectionately known as Subbiraj, was a prominent Indian character actor renowned for his contributions to Hindi-language cinema and television. Born into a distinguished lineage, he was the son of Kailash, the sister of legendary actor Prithviraj Kapoor, thus making him a cousin to the esteemed Kapoor trio – Raj, Shammi, and Shashi Kapoor.
Subbiraj’s foray into the world of cinema began with his debut film “Do Gunde,” where he showcased his talent while concurrently serving as the Studio Manager at the renowned R.K. Studio owned by the Kapoor family. However, it was his memorable portrayal of “Juror no Ten” in the 1986 film “Ek Ruka Hua Faisla” that catapulted him to prominence. His portrayal of an arrogant, hypocritical, and aggressive businessman in this remake of Sidney Lumet’s “Twelve Angry Men” earned him widespread acclaim from both critics and audiences alike.
Throughout his illustrious career, Subbiraj graced the silver screen with his remarkable performances in various films, including the 1991 hit “Maa Ki Mamta” and notable ventures like “Khiladi 420” (2000), “International Khiladi” (1999), and “Ram Aur Shyam” (1996).
In his personal life, Subbiraj found companionship with actress Baby Naaz, renowned for her role in the classic Raj Kapoor film “Boot Polish,” which garnered her a distinction award at the 1955 Cannes Film Festival. Their union blessed them with a son, Girish, and a daughter, Gauri, who remained distant from the film industry. Tragically, Baby Naaz predeceased Subbiraj in 1995, leaving behind cherished memories of their shared journey.
Subbiraj’s love for acting extended beyond the screen, as evidenced by his collaboration with Baby Naaz in two films: “Dekha Pyaar Tumhara” (1963) and “Mera Ghar Mere Bachhe” (1965).
Subbiraj’s legacy endures through his timeless performances and his significant contributions to Indian cinema. He departed from this world in July 2007, leaving behind a rich tapestry of cinematic brilliance that continues to resonate with audiences to this day.
