The Indian state of Kerala is home to cinematographer Shehnad Jalal. In the movie Chitrasutram, he made his cinematography debut. In 2010, the movie earned him the Kerala State Film Award for Best Cinematography. He received the Navaroze Contractor Award for Best Documentary Cameraman at the 4th International Documentary and Short Film Festival of Kerala in 2011 for his documentary, A Pestering Journey. For his work in the Meitei-language film Loktak Lairembee (film), which was directed by Haobam Paban Kumar, he received a nomination for Achievement in Cinematography at the Asia Pacific Screen Awards 2017.
The movie was chosen for the 2017 Berlinale FORUM after having its global premiere in the New Currents at the Busan International Film Festival in 2016. The movie took home the National Award for the Best Indian Film on Environment Conservation in 2016 as well as the Golden Gateway award for Best Film at the Mumbai International Film Festival. The Indian Society of Cinematographers (ISC) counts Shehnad Jalal as one of its members.
He enrolled in the Satyajit Ray Film and Television Institute (SRFTI), Kolkata, for a Post Graduate Diploma in Cinematography in 2002 after earning his Post Graduate Diploma in Commerce from Kerala University. He began working as the famed cinematographer Venu’s assistant after graduating in 2006, and he later collaborated with him on a number of feature films, documentaries, and TV ads.
